Following Cameroon Military’s bravery, determination and reasonable
success in the fight against what some call the Nigerian based “demonic
sect; Boko Haram, both the Unites States of America (USA) and the
Russian Government have promised to come to the support of Cameroon
against one of the most barbaric Islamist terrorists on the face of the
earth.
On Thursday 11 December 2014, the Commander of the United States Africa Command General David M. RODRIGUEZ met with Cameroon Head of State H.E President Paul Biya at the Unity Palace (presidency of Cameroon) to discuss the fight against Boko Haram. After their meeting, General RODRIGUEZ praised the leading role that President BIYA plays in the security of the region. He added that during their one hour meeting, they addressed security concerns of both countries. The U.S Commander pointed out that the security relationship between Cameroon and the United States of America continues to grow stronger and better. He concluded that the United States was preparing to increase its support to Cameroon in the fight against Boko Haram with equipment and capacity building, by providing the required training of security personnel.
Just slightly over a month after; on Friday 16 January 2015, the Russian Ambassador to Cameroon Nicolay RATSIBORINSKI also met with His Excellency Paul BIYA at the Unity Palace to also discuss security issues with Cameroon’s President. After the meeting, Ambassador RATSIBORINKI said that the discussions were very useful as they made an overview of all the main issues of concern to the international community.
Talking on the Boko Haram insurgency, Ambassador RATSIBORINSKI said that the barbaric incursions of the sect into Cameroon are an example of international terrorism.
While expressing the opinion that only a long term solution can finally put an end to such attacks, including military, economic and social actions, the Russian Diplomat made it clear that Russia was disposed to partner with Cameroon in the military domain, such as securing the borders and building economic infrastructure, especially in the Far North Region.
As a result, he announced that Cameroon will benefit in the months ahead from an important shipment of humanitarian assistance and material for civil protection, mainly geared towards helping refugees. On the military front, H.E RATSIBORINSKI said military assistance in the form of very sophisticated military equipment, the latest version of heavy artillery, including missiles, aerial protection equipment, anti-aircraft missile systems, canons, armored vehicles, and several other military equipment and armaments will be sent to Cameroon by the end of the year. He also added that, to ensure the proper use of all these military equipment, Russia will be hosting several young Cameroonians who will receive specialized military training.
Both the US and Russian pledges of support to Cameroon come at a time when the seat of Boko Haram, Nigeria has been almost absent or completely ineffective in fighting against the Islamist Sect. The Nigerian Government has been repeatedly accused by both the International Press and community of woefully failing to put up a strong fight or even a defense against the barbaric Islamic group leaving Cameroon to almost fight alone. Thousands have died as a result of the actions of Boko Haram.
Nigeria’s President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has been blamed as weak and visionless in tackling the security issues that are plaguing Africa’s largest democracy. On the other hand, President Paul Biya of Cameroon, with the full backing of the Cameroonian Army and its people has shown full resolve and determination to tackle the evil of Boko Haram that is infecting West and Central Africa. Paul Biya recently declared war against Boko Haram and Cameroon’s elite soldiers of the Rapid Intervention Brigade Unit with french acronym B.I.R, have caused significant loss of lives on the terrorists.
